Centre for Equity (CEGS) in Global Surgery – Research and Innovation

Research and Innovation

Our research efforts are centered on conducting implementation research that addresses questions driven by local contexts and needs. We are committed to supporting the development of research expertise and infrastructure across Africa, ensuring that research is informed and led by those physically present in the studied countries.

Additionally, we actively promote and support collaborative projects with international partners, fostering a global exchange of knowledge and resources to enhance surgical care and equity.

With a collaborative portfolio spanning local and regional education research, trauma systems and emergency medical services innovations, breast cancer, non-communicable diseases, surgical safety, hospital quality improvement, biomedical services, community-based burden of disease assessments, surgical access evaluations with geospatial mapping, non-technical skills research, policy evaluation and health systems strengthening research among others, we bring a deep and contextual understanding of problem solving research.

CEGS also serves as an incubation center for developing and testing education and interventional technologies that contribute to sustainable, cost-effective surgical systems. By partnering with technology companies, we collaborate to develop and promote effective strategies that advance surgical care. Additionally, we design and offer state-of-the-art simulation and community-based training programs to enhance the skills and capacity of the surgical workforce in addition to promoting real-world, local improvisation.
