Policy and Advocacy
We engage in policy and advocacy initiatives aimed at enhancing surgical care delivery across the African region. Key initiatives include the Pan-African Surgical Healthcare Forum, which seeks to mobilize African countries to adopt National Surgical Healthcare Plans/Policies to strengthen their surgical systems. Through our Global Surgery Advocacy Fellowship (GSAF) alongside partners, we bring advocacy interventions to Africa and Latin America including Sarcoma care efforts in Kenya, Road Traffic Injury interventions in Cameroon, Burn-care advocacy, post-war rebuilding, and Global Surgery research efforts in Ethiopia, patient grassroots empowerment and respectful maternal care in Rwanda, introduction of laparoscopic surgery in Ghana, medical education technology in Madagascar, rural obstetrics and gynecology care in Columbia, and high-level policy advocacy in Ecuador and Latin America.Another significant initiative is the Smart Specialization Strategy, a policy concept borrowed from innovation policy that focuses on leveraging local resources and expertise to prioritize and advance innovative fields.
